Keep Hodges Gardens State Park open

Keep Hodges Gardens State Park open

Hodges Gardens State Park is in danger of closing on June 30, 2017, if the State of Louisiana does not find the necessary funds to adequately fund the historic state park. The Louisiana Legislature, Governor John Bel Edwards, and Lt.Governor Billy Nungeser must recognize the importance of allocating funding to keep the only botanical park in Louisiana open for visitors year round. This park, on the National Register for Historic Places, is a one-of-a-kind treasure for the entire state, vitally important for tourism in northwest Louisiana, and must not be closed.

    1. Close something else that Family’s “can’t” do together. It’s the Gardens, Lake ,and Cabins that give pleasure to that remote part of Sabine Parish. Use some of that gaming money that the State Of Louisiana was suppose to use for Education and Roads. Would still like to know what that money paid for. We will be checking on that !. I guess Hodges Gardens is to much to ask for that small peice of Heaven. Don’t close our Gardens.

    2. Hodges garden is a great place to go fishing and just spending time with family beautiful scenery and I have been going there since I was a kid and know I continue to take my own children there and they love it it is just a peace of mind when you drive through the gate so I hope it stays open bc many local communities and out of town visitors I know personally enjoy going there

    3. I went today with my family per request of me for Mother’s Day and I didn’t know y’all were problems with keeping it open. But it makes sense now what I experienced today. It’s always been one of my favorite places but I thought the $7 a person is a lot of money for a family of 4 and none of fountains were working and the grounds weren’t really maintained. I’m not trying to be negative, I do hope it stays open but I wasn’t very happy with what I saw today there, I’m just being honest, I’m sorry . It’s sad when something I loved so much was like I saw it today

  1. Please don’t close! I am just thinking of when we drove from East Texas to there when I was a little girl with my parents & friends in 2 cars, but it was beautiful! Now if only we knew the future…I could turn to my Mother (who I’ve lost 19 years ago) & say: one day my Daughter will live just up the road on the Hill in Hornbeck with her Husband & 5 children! They will come often & enjoy, even at Christmas time! Love it!

  2. It would really, truly be heartbreaking if you were to close this park. It is one of the only places in Louisiana worth visiting.

  3. Please keep this park open. It’s one of Louisiana’s finest !!!
It would be such a tragedy to our state if it were to close down.
The beauty in that park is breathtaking .
It’s one of my places of serenity… We desperately need it to stay open.
A must see when one visits Louisiana…

  4. Please keep Hodges’s Gardens open. The gardens are so beautiful. My friends and I ride our horses over there on the horse trails. It is so nice to have a safe, clean, beautiful place to ride and visit.

What a sad, sad thing to lose Hodges’s Gardens. Our class went there in Junior High School, early ’60s, for exploring and a picnic. My husband and I took our three kids there for a picnic and to enjoy with beautiful gardens in the early 80s. Family just took a day driving through, enjoying the flowers, fountains, water falls and lakes in the early ’90s. Our last trip were with friends driving three vintage cars from Natchitoches to cruise the beautiful grounds. That was in the mid 90s. What a shame that other families won’t make these memories. Please keep the gardens open.

  6. How about cutting salaries a little bit (or a lot) in the capital until they can learn to quit over spending? They always make cuts and raise taxes. They vote to give themselves pay raises (which are usually undeserving) and still complain that they are way over budget. Drop their salaries by 50% until they can learn how to stay under budget without having to cut anything. Once they can accomplish that, then and only then they can start EARNING pay raises. Make them pay for expenses out of their own pocket (such as plane tickets for business trips) and once the trip/job is complete they can be reimbursed. Until they fix the major spending problem at the capital, Louisiana will never get ahead and stop seeing cuts on everything every time we turn around.

  7. Homecoming. Traveling back to Louisiana every two years is Homecoming. It’s seeing family, friends, fishing at Cypress Bend, McClanahan’s bar-b-que place, and family reunions at Hodges’s State Park. Taking away this park is like taking away your history. Most state’s preserve their historical monuments because it represents the essence of what the state is made of: pride, beautiful, and down-to-earth people. Hodges’s is a coming home escape from rush hour traffic and the daily grind of making a living. Hodges’s has got to be there when we come. If a politician is worth their salt then they will fight to preserve this legacy. So write him or her and tell them to fight!

  8. Very beautiful place to visit and very peaceful. It is a great place to take your family, would hate to see it closed.

  9. I love this park .I visited the park this March it is truly very peaceful and beautiful there. .Had a great grime with my sister and niece please keep this park open.

  10. I loved visiting there at Christmas the emphasis they placed on Christ at the manger scene by the lake was so awesome.Makes me proud to live in a state that allows that .Please keep it open it is such a blessing to our state and others visiting.

  11. This lovely place is vital for our tourist industry. It is a true gem in the crown of Louisiana. Surely there are other areas in the state bugdet that need to be trimmed.

  12. I loved Hodges Gardens as a teenager in the 60’s and have been there so many times over the years. I have fond memories of singing in the Easter Sunrise Service in the 60’s. It was a place my husband and I went to visit just a few days after out marriage in 1970. Have been back so many times over the years when my parents retired in Sabine Parish. Was there four years ago and still a wonderful garden and experience. I would be so sad to see it close.

  13. I have grown up around Hodges gardens from girl scout adventures to the 4th of July fireworks to the Christmas light display!! I live in East Texas now and took my 2 kids there this past Christmas to see the lights. We loved it and loved making memories there. Its heartbreaking to hear that they are even discussing closing it down.

  14. I love Hodges garden it pretty out. I live in florien all my life. I am upset before we need to put God in this. By Amy salter

  15. I can’t believe you are even considering closing this beautiful part of your state! There are not that many places in the Ark-La-Tex that are this beautiful and enjoyable by families! I even remember when the Centenary Choir used to do musicals on TV from there. Our family loved it.

  16. Please don’t close this state treasure! As as child I would go every year during Christmas time, this is the place where most of my childhood Christmas memories came from! This is also the last place I ever spoke to my sister before she passed away the next day. This beautiful park means so much to my family.

  17. Growing up in East Texas, Hodges Gardens was a place to go to see the beautiful flowers and shrubs throughout the year. For over 50 years, my family has gone and enjoyed this wonderful place. My children and grand children love going there. Please keep this beautiful facility open for people to enjoy for many more years.

  18. Lived in Many – love and loved Hodges Gardens. Such a beautiful place to let it die – plz keep it open to the State for places to visit and relax, such a beautiful place.

  19. If it is on National Historic Register I would think the state would not be allowed to close the Gardens. It is a great honor to have a place on the NHR!!

Oh wait, this Louisiana, they may want to put a parking lot!!!!

Please, please DO NOT close this beautiful!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Signed the Petition as well! Please do NOT close this remarkable place! Find some way to keep it open. We need to preserve our natural resources not only for us to enjoy now but also for the future naturalists, scientists, photographers, birders and wildlife enthusiasts. Too many of these places are going by the way side. I live in Orange, Tx and have made the trip over to enjoy the Gardens frequently just as others from this area do. Surely some of the Casino money could be used for restoration and maintenance! Please, please, please save this beautiful place!

  21. Hodges’s Gardens was a family tradition for us @ Christmas time every year. Then throughout year we visited to see all the beautiful flowers. Something we looked forward to every year. I brought my boys here to visit once they loved it as much as I did growing up. My daughter has not had the chance to go and experience the peaceful beauty this place has to see. Taking in the scenery. Hodges’s Gardens is a great place to keep open; It’s a historical place for myself personally just from the memories I have.

  22. Nice read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing a little research on that. And he just bought me lunch since I found it for him smile Therefore let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch! “We have two ears and only one tongue in order that we may hear more and speak less.” by Laertius Diogenes.
