Some parish agency offices will soon have new locations

MANY, La.— Parish agency locations are about to be shuffled around a bit as the Sabine Parish Police Jury addresses cramped quarters in the Courthouse and optimizes space.

Several offices will be relocated within the Courthouse and in buildings owned by the jury near the Courthouse.

Perhaps the most significant change will be the relocation of the Sabine Parish Registrar of Voters office, which will be off-site from the Courthouse for the first time. To my knowledge, the Registrar’s office has always been in the Courthouse.

The Police Jury recently purchased the old James Lynn Davis Law Office building at Capitol and Main (most recently CADA rehab services) for $180,000. The building will be remodeled and will probably be occupied after the start of next year.

The Registrar’s office will be relocated to this building, which means local residents will register to vote and cast ballots during early voting periods there. I inquired about whether parking might be an issue at the new location—there is only minimal street parking for the office, plus parking across the street at the District Attorney’s office—to accommodate the significant number of early voters in larger elections, and I am awaiting a response from Registrar Zachery Faircloth. The Courthouse is diagonally across the street from the new location, so existing Courthouse street parking might suffice.

Also moving to the new building will be the Veterans Affairs office, which has been located across the street from the Courthouse in a parish-owned building for several years.

The shuffling will also relocate the E-911 offices, currently in the Courthouse, to the north half of the building where Veterans Affairs is now. The parish’s Building Permit office is on the south half of that building.

The office relocations will further include expansion of the Police Jury offices into a new addition to the Courthouse, a project completed about three months ago. The approximately $162,000 project was funded mostly by the state through legislative appropriations, with $125,000 allocated. The jury covered the remaining $37,000. This new addition, at the front of the Courthouse and directly behind the main Police Jury office, will accommodate Jury administration.

Other changes include:

— Probation and Parole for the Sabine Sheriff’s Department will be relocated to the former shared 911 office space.

— The Police Jury will establish a Human Resources office in the “hallway office” area of the Courthouse.

The Police Jury approved these relocation recommendations at its August meeting.
