Have heard so much regarding support for and opposition of a tax proposition to enable the Sabine Parish Library to continue operation. 99 percent of the opposition I hear relates to an anti-tax sentiment, which I totally get. But please understand when voting or deciding to vote at all that the library is asking for a very small tax for a very large benefit. The 2 mill tax is the low end of what any parish library system is asking for or receives … most parish systems operate with at least 4 mills and there are many in the state which get 8-plus mills… I found some that levied upwards of 9 mills even. I understand in this day that any tax seems too much but I also believe a library is an enormous asset to every community and the absence of one is generally felt by the community and its collective.
The library is so very important to me and to my community that I am fully behind the proposition. I’m a property owner and between my family individually and our business, we will be paying some if the measure passes… so while I understand the hesitation of additional taxes, when all things are considered, I believe our library is very well worth the expense.
For one thing above all, I believe our children should get at the very least what we have always had guaranteed access to … libraries filled with books!
