We have received a couple of requests to detail the parish sales taxes in Sabine… In researching, I learned a little that showed me how behind I am … back when I was at the newspaper, the Police Jury and the School Board each received one cent on every dollar spent in the parish in sales tax revenues. Now, it is double that parishwide for the School Board (2 cents for every dollar ; and even higher in some individual districts).

Also, the state levies 5 cents on every dollar of sales (I last remember it at 4 cents, which I actually thought was capped at that amount).

Here is a breakdown for the parish:

In Sabine Parish, Louisiana, the total sales tax rate consists of the statewide Louisiana sales tax (currently 5.00% effective January 1, 2025) plus local parish/municipal levies that vary by location.

The local rates are administered by the Sabine Parish Sales and Use Tax Commission and are broken down into specific dedicated levies (often voter-approved) that fund particular entities. These are expressed as percentages of the purchase price (e.g., 2.00% = 2 cents per dollar; 0.25% = ¼ cent per dollar; 0.125% = ⅛ cent per dollar).

• Sabine Parish School Board: 2.00% (2 cents per dollar) — dedicated to the parish school board.

• Police Jury (parish governing authority): 1.00% (1 cent per dollar) — for parish government operations.

• Law Enforcement: 0.75% (¾ cent per dollar) — dedicated to law enforcement (Sabine Sheriff).

• Council on Aging: 0.25% (¼ cent per dollar) — for senior services/council on aging.

• District Attorney: 0.125% (⅛ cent per dollar) — dedicated to the district attorney’s office (this matches the style of your example).

Additional school district levy (0.50% or ½ cent per dollar): This varies by area — either to School District 34 (in certain parts of the parish) or to the balance of Parish School District 2 (most other areas). It is on top of the parishwide School Board levy.

City-Specific Additional Levies If the sale occurs inside an incorporated city/town, an extra city tax applies (on top of the above): • Many: +1.00% • Zwolle: +2.00% • Converse, Florien, or Pleasant Hill: +1.00% each No city tax applies outside municipalities or in School District 34 areas for the city column. lataonline.org

Combined Local Rates by Location (Excluding State Tax) These are current as of 2025 (no major changes noted into 2026): • Many: 5.625% local • School District 34 areas: 4.625% local • Balance of Parish (School District 2): 4.625% local • Zwolle: 6.625% local • Converse, Florien, or Pleasant Hill: 5.625% local each

Total combined rate (local + state 5%) ranges from about 9.625% to 11.625%, depending on exact location.

Also, it appears when these taxes were voted in, or some point thereafter, they became permanent. They have no “sunsets” or expiration dates. Property taxes are voted in or renewed for prescriptive finite time periods. I guess we are stuck with the sales taxes, to answer further questions I received.
