Photo taken in 1963, before Toledo Bend Reservoir was created by damming the Sabine River. 66-year-old Levi Crowell sat in front of his place on the Sabine River… defiant about leaving even though the river would soon flood and its waters would be used to create a 186,000 acre lake. Back then, Levi told a newspaper reporter that he was going to sit there “until the last chick floated by” at which time he would “grab a log and follow it.” Photo dated Nov. 3, 1963.
