From The Longview News Journal, January 1968... "Aerial view of Pendleton Bridge at Gaines Crossing-- This is a "fly bird" view of the Gaines Crossing of the Sabine River, which divides Texas and Louisiana... the crossing widely used in Pre-Republic days of Texas by emigrants of "The United States of the North". A reminder of such days is seen in the extreme lower left corner. The 156-year-old Gaines-McGown house, which was the Gaines Ferry Inn at one time, was still near the riverbanks when the aerial photo was made, but has since been moved eight miles back up El Camino Real to Milam, Texas, where it has been made a museu. Remains of the 35-year-old Pendleton Bridge before it was disassembled also can be seen at the left of the new 2.8-mile Pendleton Bridge. When Toledo Bend Lake is full, water will cover trees and other growth seen on the Louisiana side of the river in the upper part of the photo"
