Constructed about the same time as Toledo Bend and using the same engineering force for planning (U. S. Army Corps of Engineers) was Sam Rayburn Lake (originally to be called McGee Bend Dam and Reservoir but changed to “Sam Rayburn Dam and Reservoir”, in honor of the recently deceased Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Sam Rayburn, a long-time champion of soil and water conservation). Construction on Sam Rayburn’s Dam started a bit before Toledo Bend’s dam, but both the Angelina River for Rayburn and Sabine River for Toledo Bend began to fill to form their respective lakes in the mid 60s.
