New Llano, just a tiny bit south of Leesville, has such a unique history. Originally called Stables, Louisiana, the town was renamed in 1917 when 200 members of the Socialist commune Llano del Rio Cooperative Colony in California relocated here, giving the town its present name. For the next 22 years, until 1939, The town continued to function as a socialist commune with citizens pooling and sharing resources and wealth. Today, the town has some 2000 residents. This image is a sketched map from 1936 of New Llano, also called Llano Cooperative Colony.
