A really neat article with some information previously unknown to me. Was published in a 1920 issue of The New Orleans Item, which proposes that the very first church in Louisiana may have been in Robeline, in the 17th century.
The article details a colony developed near Robeline (Adaes) when Spain attempted to lay claim in what later became Louisiana by sending a number of Canary Islanders over here (and serving the dual purpose of easing the human suffering in the Canary Islands from famine by dispersing some of its inhabitants in other areas of the world). Further, the article tells of Father Margil’s (later referred to as the patron Saint of Texas and today being considered for canonization) involvement in the new colony and missions there.
