If it looks like an alligator and smells like an alligator... Then it must be... A gar? 1954, Paul Burr is shown squatting above an alligator gar pulled from the Sabine River. Pie Martinez had shared this photo with The Index many years ago. Martinez explained that his father, "Choock" Martinez hauled logs for the Mansfield Hardwood Lumber Company across this homemade bridge. When the river was low, they would connect Louisiana and Texas by crossing the Sabine River at this point, which was two miles west of Ebarb (where the Burrs lived) Martinez noted it was too far to haul logs through Many by way of he Pendleton Bridge to get to Patroon, Texas. At this time, Hwy. 191 did not exist. #sabineriver #alligatorgar #sabinebridge
